“NASL Notebook” features the sale of Clyde Best and Stewart Scullion from the Tampa Bay Rowdies to the Portland Timbers (their Soccer Bowl ’75 opponent). The Timbers also acquired Archie Roboostoff for the much-traveled Chris Dangerfield. The Los Angeles Aztecs re-signed Ron Davies and George Bests pal Bobby McAlinden for the ’77 season. Other players signed were Derek Smethurst (Tampa) and the Demlings (Buzz & Mark) with the San Jose Earthquakes). Details of the last-minute demise of the Boston Minutemen and Philadelphia Atoms came as a shock to NASL fans.

US Soccer failure was more frequent in this era. Paul Gardner chronicles the misery of the US team losing to Canada in Port-au-Prince Haiti. Notable players on the US team include future indoor stars Julie Veee (Arrows & Sockers), Fred Grgurev (Fever, Arrows, Rockets, Americans, Spirit & Express) and Jim Pollihan (Arrows, Summit & Blast).

The centerfold is a random action shot from a friendly between Santos (Brazil) and Chivas (Guadalajara)
