The Sports Arena was opened in 1959 and was the home of the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA from October 1960 to December 1967. The Lakers became the NBA’s first West Coast team after owner Bob Short decided to move the team to Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Clippers of the NBA also called the Sports Arena home from 1984 to 1999. The Los Angeles Stars of the ABA played 2 seasons from 1968 to 1970 before moving to Utah.
Hockey fans watched the Los Angeles Blades of the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 1961 until 1967. Then the Los Angeles Kings brought the NHL to town. In their inaugural 1967–68 season, with The Forum still under construction, the Kings called the Sports Arena and Long Beach Arena home(s) from October to December 1967. Later, the Los Angeles Sharks, a WHA team that began at the league’s inception in 1972 called the Sports Arena home. They relocated to Detroit in 1974 after 2 lukewarm seasons. They became the Michigan Stags, failed miserably, moved to Baltimore re-named the “Blades” and promptly folded.
The Sports Arena was home to college basketball. The USC from 1959 to 2006 and the UCLA from 1959 to 1965. The Los Angeles Aztecs of the NASL played one season of indoor soccer (1980–81) before moving to the Forum.
Many of the scenes from Rocky were actually shot in the arena, although the announcers led us to believe it was the Philadelphia Spectrum..
