American Soccer’s “Dark Ages” was the period of time in between the demise of the NASL and the arrival of MLS. During this time there were a lot of shoe-string budgets and teams playing in high school facilities. Owners had the heart but not the deep pocketed commitment the sport needed.
The Los Angeles Salsa actually rose above the standards and drew good sized crowds at soccer-friendly CSF’s Titan Stadium. The team ultimately folded when the USSF decided the upstart Major League Soccer (MLS) would be granted division 1 status—not the ASPL. The Salsa’s owner, William de la Peña was upset and tried to enter the Salsa into Mexico’s Primera-A (the second division in Mexico). See links below for the colorful story:
