The October 11th Issue proudly boats that the USA is back in the Olympics! Unfortunately the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and Western nations boycotted the Moscow games. Michele Jurich describes the events that landed the USA in the Olympics. Michael Lewis has a colorful piece “Tank takes a poke at the NASL”. Over in Minnesota, longtime fan favorite Allan Merrick was waived. Veteran NASL Chronicler, Colin Jose, charts how attendance was up for 14 NASL clubs. The US Mens national team fell to France 3-0. US coach Walt Chyzowych described this as a “Good Result” considering a previous 6-0 drubbing to France the previous year in New York. In Portland, Dave Davis gives the scoop on the Timbers sale to Louisiana Pacific for $850,000.00 (the beginning of the end for the original Portland Timbers).
