In NASL Notebook, Ft Lauderdale’s Ron Newman was kicked upstairs from the Head coach position. The Cosmos drew over 1 million the previous 2 seasons. South African sensation Jomo Sono teamed up with fellow South African teammate on the Atlanta Chiefs. Trivia note: South African star Kaizer Motaung played for the original Chiefs in the early years of the NASL. His team in South Africa is named “Chiefs” and still uses the Atlanta Chiefs logo to this day.

Windy City Woes chronicles the  small crowds and what owner Lee Stern plans on doing to turn things around (Note: He actually turned things around and the Sting was actually one of the stronger teams in the last 4 seasons of the league).

Finally, in ASL Action. The Pennsylvania Storers announce they will be the first North American team to spoort a sponsor logo on the front of their jerseys. Now a common sight in world soccer this was a breakthrough domestically. Alpo dog food seemed like a funny sponsor for a pro soccer team—but not as unusual as the name Stoners.

USMNT fans can re-live “U.S. Soccer’s Finest Hour? Historic Victory in Budapest”. Back in a time where US Soccer was a bake sale enterprise this was a major accomplishment.
