Soccer America August 1979 4-Pack

We packaged these 4 content-filled issues into one “Postal forwarding tag blemished cover set”.

What they lack in cover aesthetics they certainly make up for in content, including: Allegations of match fixing in a game between Rochester and New England. By August 23rd, the Philadelphia Fury was getting it together. The Chicago Sting “Mauled” the Strikers while the San Diego Sockers “Destroyed” the California Surf. Meanwhile up in Canada, the Toronto Blizzard was no match for the defending champs—the New York Cosmos. Dave Payne penned a series “Saga of an American Coach” describing Terry Fishers experiences. In another feature article, Michele Jurich pens “Getting Theirs” about how little the American players received in salaries compared to their foreign teammates who were paid very well. The Boston Minutemen said Good-bye to Nickerson Field (Formerly Braves field). Ray Ratto’s 1979 Playoff Preview is a classic, featuring the San Diego Sockers Hugo Sanchez and Leonardo Cuellar. In a later issue, Tampa Bay Rowdies fan favorite Rodney Marsh, the “Clown Prince” was approaching retirement and George Best was AWOL again in Ft Lauderdale. If you’re a Johan Cruyff fans there is plenty to read in the August 2nd Issue. By August 2nd, an 18 year old Canadian named Branko Segota has scored all 8 of Rochesters goals. He went on to be the San Diego Sockers all-time leading scorer  (Kraig Chiles has since eclipsed that record). And in Torrance, my home town, the California Sunshine clinched the ASL West Crown.
