Victor Rangel scored 2 goals, the second with only six minutes to play, and Mexico edged the Skyhawks 3-2. The game was played before 9,652 fans at the LA Coliseum. The news clipping in the center pages describes the game and shows just how little ink soccer fans had to look forward to in the 1970’s.

30 years later, Victor Rangel would become the first coach of the Tijuana Xolos. Additionally, an 18 year old named Hugo Sanchez played for Mexico that night. He would go on to be arguably Mexico’s greatest player (He would also be playing for the San Diego Sockers within 2 years).

3 years after this game, Skyhawks head coach Ron Newman would become the San Diego Sockers' head coach. His Sockers won 10 titles in 11 years and his name is on the trophy for the Indoor Soccer champions each year. The current Sockers have added 4 more Ron Newman cup banners to the Sports Arena Rafters—bringing the Franchise total to 14 Championships.
